Ice, Solder and DMR Contacts

24-January-2026

We're currently in the throws of what may shape up to be a historic ice storm! What that means practically is that the roads are all closed and I've got pleanty of time to spend on soldering projects, HAM radio, and Star Trek. Today I assembled a little clock kit I ordered from China for a few dollars. Everything went smoothly and it's a functional little clock, I might even mount it in the shack.

I also had the opportunity to make my first private DMR contact with a local buddy and chat for a bit. Of course there was the obligatory weather report but we also swapped tales about satellite spotting and the cluttered intricacies of Pi-Star setup.

Now I've settled in with an episode of Star Trek: Voyager and a cup of tea to enjoy some climate imposed R&R. I was able to get some of my favorite Gameboy games running via emmulation of the venerable Toshiba NB-205 so I'll be sure to introduce the kids to Tetris and Pokemon this evening.

All said, not a bad start to what may turn out to be an extended snow vacation.
